I'm the FIRST to admit that I'm only a casual observer of Anime and maybe not the most qualified to give an opinion on this movie. I can only tell you what I thought when I watched it:
I remember only two things:
1) People hollering AKIRRRRAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
2) 35 minutes of explosions and people being crushed by a man's flab expanding to the size of small moon.
I realize that this is the film that defines Anime in the West...whatever. I found it almost totally inaccesable but admired the animation.
I'm not a big fan of anime either. I actually watched this in John Abbott. I took some sort of Asian film studies something or other. I didn't mind this so much. I've seen tons of similar crap that was way worse than Akira.
Yeah, not an anime fan either. I remember seeing this with Mikey and Charles and we laughed so hard because of all the screaming and explosions. Very over the top. We screamed "AKIIIIRAAA!!!!" and "TETSUOOOOOOO!!!" and "KINAYDAAAAAAAAA!!!!" and "AAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!" for weeks after. And Charles made his big funny explosion noises.
Oh Charles, he had his moments.
