Director(s): Spike Lee

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of Joe Doucette, a man who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement, for no apparent reason. When he is suddenly released without explanation, he begins an obsessive mission to find out who imprisoned him, only to discover that the real mystery is why he was set free.

This wasn't bad, not worth the critical ripping it got when released. My main gripe is that it just seemed unnecessary. You may enjoy it more if you haven't seen the Korean original, but if you have, you'll notice some missing elements that make the original stand out so much more. That being said, the casting is inspired and Josh Brolin comes off like a young, stone-faced Nick Nolte. Lee's love for the original is apparent, but that film pushed the envelope so far that for Lee to not do the same here is a missed opportunity. Elizabeth Olsen (she'll be playing Marvel's Scarlet Witch!) was very good here, and yes, there's bewbes, for those keeping track (i.e. all of you).
