I am never more impressed than when a movie is completely restrained in its story telling, and yet manages to keep your attention, and draws you in.

This is a prime case, as was The American, which I saw a few weeks ago.

Really, not much happens in this movie. It is simply the day in the life of a very sad man, who has lost what is important to him. Told through flashbacks, with a remarkable performance (again restrained) from Colin Firth, this movie is gripping, thoughtful, and ultimately very impressive.

I saw it weeks ago on DVD - it left an impression.
