Big fail here. Darrell rented this so we sat down for a mindless thrill-fest (minus the thrills). Kinda funny that my mom watched with us too. I haven't seen parts 3 & 4, nor have any desire to, but I guess you don't really need to. This film provides enough frickin' flashbacks to update the newbies, also ensuring the original Jigsaw killer gets screen time, since he's technically been dead for 2 or 3 movies now. So between mucho flashbacks and lots of boring detective work, I kept forgetting that meanwhile there's 5 people stuck in another complex Jigsaw torture house, trying to solve riddles to get out alive. Of course, at this point in the franchise, all anyone wants to see is new and nifty traps and methods of killing people. It doesn't take long to figure out how all this gets played out, but what was really confusing/distracting was the casting choices of the two main leads (Costas Mandylor & Scott Patterson) because they looked exactly alike. When put into the dimly-lit confines of the film, it was hard to tell them apart sometimes, especially when they had a fight scene. You couldn't at least cast a blonde guy, just to tell them apart? Here's Scott Patterson:
...and here's Costas Mandylor:
I mean, at least two different dudes!
Agreed on all counts. I have seen Saw 1 to 3 and now 5. Don't think it mattered that I missed 4. Anywho, I did enjoy the 5 people trapped in the house / maze thingy, wish the movie focused WAY more on those guys and less on the actual 2 leads.
Agree again with Mitch about all the flash backs. Too much and it really wasn't needed.
Anyways, I'm sure over the next few weeks Mitch & I will be reviewing Saw VI (Mitch, you know it).
I hear it's terrible - I'll be right over!
