Now then, I have vocally hated on the first two films. However, the previews for this one (damn those shifty, conniving previews!) have actually made me keen to check out the 3rd one. I like Thomas Hayen Church as Sandman, we'll see how it pans out. The Venom story should be interesting too....

Could someone (Rob I'm looking at you) give us a brief summary as to the plot behind Venom?

I was big into Spiderman comics as a kid, but started losing interest right about at this time. I have the basics, but what is the origin of Venom?

A little help?

I can give you the CARTOON background of Venom...but I cede the floor to Rob, my comic-lore geek master (until I find those Unicorn Horns......bide my time....bide my time....).

Okay, here goes:

In 1984, Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, and half the Fantastic Four were kidnapped and brought into space by a character called the Beyonder for the express purpose of fighting an assemblage of Marvel's greatest villains. Twelve issues of non-stop slugfest called The Secret Wars.

In one issue Spidey's costume gets shredded. Since Spidey's always been about keeping his identity secret, more so than everyone else in the Marvel Universe, he's understandably concerned. He finds what he thinks is a machine that will repair his costume, only it changes his costume completely to the black-and-white "cool" costume he wore throughout the rest of the eighties.

Entering the nineties, comics went 'darker' and 'grittier' - and so it turned out that the costume wasn't a costume at all, but a symbiotic alien lifeform. It tries to take over Spidey's brain, he rejects it, big fight scene, the 'costume' symbiote is 'killed'.

Only it's not. Instead it goes into hiding until it senses a similarly-minded individual nearby - Eddie Brock, a rival photographer who hates Peter Parker for getting all the good photos and hates Spider-Man... just like the symbiote. The symbiote latches onto Brock, turning him into Venom, evil psychotic killer alien hybrid thingie.

I don't think they're doing anything like that for the movie. At least, not the alien part. It will probably be created by Oscorp Industries as a part of Harry's plot to kill his former best friend. I predict that the film won't have Venom in it at all, just a fight between Peter and the suit, and a cliffhanger of the suit finding Eddie Brock...

The Sandman effects look kick ass.

wow thanks. That actually sounds like a good story for the movie, even if they don't keep to the true origin of the suit. I knew it was an alien life form of sorts, but that helps. Thanks again

yeeesh. That pic above is so wrong.

Anywho, went to see the late, late show of Spidey 3 last night. I know that no one has seen it yet so

***********SPOILER WARNING******************

***********WAIT FOR IT***********************

Ok. So many points to touch upon. First off, this was by far the weakest of the 3 (IMO), however with all it's faults (and there were plenty) I still enjoyed it and would recommend it. The pros far out weighed the cons for me. I also had lower expectations on this installment which may have helped.
Lets start with the cons
The biggest complaint I have here is that they really didn't need the Sandman character in this movie. They tried to pack too many characters in, and it weakend the strength of the plot behind the villains. Sandman was done well, and was cool, and although there was not much acting required, Church did a good job in the role and was cast well. The "origin" of Sandman is a joke. I mean, the guy is running through a field in the middle of the night and randomly falls into some sand pit, where there just happens to randomly be some scientist to science stuff at 2:00am (which wasn't even explained...pretty fucking weak.

I think that the story with Eddie Brock & Venim (coupled with "Gobby jr") was more than enough meat to make this movie work.

I HATED that he wore his hair in the stupid "Little Nicky" doo when he wore the black suit. The whole scene at the club...booooo. My LEAST favorite scene from all 3 spidey films combined.

The scene with the crane was pretty questionable too. I don't think the crane had the reach to actually level that other building. He saves Stacey and then takes a few snap shots with Brock and then leaves...HELLO!! Other people are still up there...the building is still falling...HELLO!!!

Lastly, the whole ending was balls. Spidey teaming up with Gobby was border line gay romping (as Jeff would say). The whole "I forgive you, you forgive me" bull dink. Why didn't Spidey, Gobby & Sandman all circle jerk each other and call it a day.

Now on to the pros.
Thought the acting was very good. Action sequences were great, just as good as the first 3 movies. F/X were AWESOME. Venim was SOOOO COOOOOL. The mary Jane / Parker plot line was quite good. Not much more than that. For all the things I disliked, I still found lots that I did like, and on the whole the movie worked.

All that being said, it is the lesser of the trilogy, and my prediction is a big fat bomb from Mitch and possibly some others.

PS. Doctor connor (who Peter brought the sample to and his university) is Lizard. Leaves a door open there + Sandman is still alive + There is still the sample of Venom with Dr Connor. I really hope they stop the franchise after this. I thing the next one will be like the Dr Freeze version of Batman..a big steaming bowl of crap-o-la

PPS - cameo by Bruce Campbell was great

LOL!
Hilarious review bro!
You may all be stunned to know that I thoroughly enjoyed this film, after much hating on the first two. Thing is, I agree with most of what Deril said above. I think Sandman was cool (though his origin was kinda pulled out of someone's ass), rather it was Goblin Jr.'s character who I think should've been put aside. Green Goblin was boring, I didn't need Goblin Jr. flying around (though he was better rendered). Venom was fucking awesome! I think he'll be back. Bruce Campbell cameo - very funny. I liked the evil Parker, being all cheesy in his black duds, and the bar dance scene didn't bother me, hokey as it was. That scene with the crane - yeah, I was thinking the same thing too.
Lots of action/fight scenes, all well-rendered and completely watchable (I'm looking at YOU '28 Weeks Later'!), the MJ story was good - probably because they hit serious turmoil.
Lots of story to cover, done well.
I dunno how to explain what hooked me and kept me enthralled for 2 1/2 hours, when I so despised the first two films, but I look forward to a fourth film with Lizard and possibly more Venom.

I think I side more with Deril than with his big brother on this one, folks...

While I enjoyed the movie on a WHOLE, I found parts of it were downright tedious and distracting. There was about 30 minutes TOO much "lovey-dovey" peace and harmony crapolla ("I FORGIVE YOU MAN!" "You forgive me!?! I FORGIVE YOU, TOO!" Boo-hoo...waaah...GROOOOUP HUGGGG! Puh-lease). I went to see a SUPER-HERO movie, not a twelve-step program.

While the heroes and villains in this one were "bitchin", they were under-used due to diminishing returns...simply TOO many MAJOR LEAGUE story lines tried to cram into 2.5 hours (with the afformentioned love sub-plots taking up much of that real-estate). Venom ALONE is worthy of a full movie (and fack was he AWWWWESOME when he FINALLY arrived!!!)

My other complaint which I mentioned to Mitch was the amount of time they spend TAKING OFF THEIR MASKS. While I understand they HAVE to do this for face time with Topher Grace and what's his face (LOL! Totally forgot his name...Peter Parker!!!), it really distracts from the manacing COOLNESS of the wide open mouth/teeth of Venom (and where was his giant tongue??!)

And they had to intercut ALL the fight scenes with "comic relief" (ex: JJ Jameson trying to buy a camera from a kid)...

Lots of Pro-American flag waving, too...but that was prevalent in the first two as well.

ALSO! (POL! SOUNDS like I hated the film, eh?)The butler.....WTF was up with the Osborne's BUTLER!?? I was thinking this MUST be a "Stan Lee"esque cameo (Rob?!), 'cuz this actor SUCKS!! He delivered a dead-pan couple of lines which had TREMENDOUS weight (*SPOILER WARNING*)

Had he TOLD Harry YEARS ago that he KNEW his dad had died of his own hands, would have saved a WHACK of trouble...no!? Guess he was off taking acting lessons.

Like I said, I liked the movie over all, but it's FAR the worst of the three...we were discussing who could be the villains in 4 and on, obviously they've taken lengths to introduce Dr. Conners, so the Lizard is a possibility.

Doc Ock never really SEEMED to die, just sank (I think Rob explained that he didn't actually die, something to do with a bubble his arms created or something...). Venom isn't dead, with Eddie Brock seeming to FUSE with it at the end and disappear, easy to write back in.

Sandman just "Floated off", so he's still there...

I want ELECTRO! WITH the lighting-bolt mask!!!

There's also Mysterio, The Rhino, Kraven the Hunter, The Scorpion, Kingpin, The Vulture, a whole wack of them...

But my vote's for ELECTRO!!

What's your rating of this movie?
