Director(s): Christophe Gans

It?s always been said that a video game cannot be successfully adapted into a film. With SILENT HILL, director Christophe Gans (BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF) and screenwriter Roger Avary (KILLING ZOE) have the benefit of the atmospheric and often terrifying game series of the same name. With a budget reportedly in excess of $50 million, they wisely eschew dense plot in favor of a kaleidoscopic nightmare--culled from several volumes of the game series--designed to give horror fans what they crave. This film got a bad rap upon release, as most movies based on video games do, but I rather enjoyed it.
On the downside, the running time was overly long with a few scenes where you think it could end soon, but it doesn't. And the plot is dodgy, at best. I think I understood the bulk of it, and I've never played the game or have any previous knowledge of the game's plot, so I have nothing to go on, and was confused more than once. The pacing is kinda slow and trudging too - kinda like walking down long hallways in video games waiting for something to happen....
Regardless, these shortcomings didn't prevent me from being absorbed in the film.
The pluses: visually dynamic and engaging, a couple of female co-stars who're easy on the eyes (one in a tight, leather-clad cop uniform), and some cool creature and boss-villain effects.
Again, it could be because of low expectations, but this was better than I thought it would be.
Pyramid Head was cool.

Very good film relative to most of the schlock that's "based" on video games. One thing that always bugs me about ports from games like this is that they have to kind of "Hollywood"ize the movies to make them more "mainstream" for the non-gamer.

This was sort of evident here as most of the GAME Silent Hill is scary about what is NOT happening, it's all atmosphere and mood, there will be stretches of game where you go like an HOUR without ANYTHING happening/attacking but you shaite yourself because for the entire HOUR you're READY for something to happen. The suspense grows so thick you cut it with a spork.

Of course, they don't have TIME to build that much atmosphere in a 90 minute movie, so they need to build quick, then have a gory monster, build quick then have another gory monster, then have a semi-clear "BAD GUY" and a question-mark ending.

So, while it wasn't ANYWHERE close as scary/cool as the game from whence it came, it was a good film none-the-less.

But I'm glad I rented it!

NOW if they'd ONLY announce Peter Jackson as the helm for Halo: The Movie, I could have a gamergasm and be done with it!

......sigh, BACK to Warcraft.

Level 42 Rogue now, D-Bor....still waiting for you to actually PLAY with me.

still waiting for D-Bor to "play with you" eh? I won't even go there as it's just too easy.

On another note, I wouldn't go so far as to call you a loser with no life, but WHY would you play any game where you spenad an hour "going nothing and killing nothing"....ooooh, sounds like a rockin' good time to me(sarcasm off).

First Mitchy, your pic is PRO D&D, not against it!!!

Clips, come to my server, Gilneas. Reasonable size, good ping rate (at least for Montreal).

Have you started PVPing yet? I want to kick your ass!

MasterWoodsman For The Win! For the Horde!

I was aware the pic was pro D&D Derek, I just thought it was funny.
If you want me to bash D&D, well, okay!

Papamikey wrote on December 20, 2006, 9:29 am
Does Gilneas have any queues? On Saturday night, for example!?

It's $20US to migrate...

What I'M saying is that you already HAVE a decently levelled char to play on Perenolde: my old Crompet...if you wanted to TRY playing right away.

Yes, I was just PVP'ing last night...Arathi. Not OVERLY thrilled with PVP, find it too cluttered and hectic. Am looking forward to 4X4 arenas, where you can actually DO something without being mobbed by 10-12 enemies.

Did SOME 2X2 in Gadget Arena and enjoyed it immensely, killed one Horde dufus and would have had the other but he discovered my stealth before I could AMBUSH his sorry ass with "Cold Blood". As soon as a rogue is discovered, he's essentially dead in the water.

DAMN AOE freezing spells!!!

"Listen to yourself man, your hanging with nerds!"

Okay guys, isn't there a WOW chatspace for this stuff?

And where's Jeffy's review of 'Silent Hill' already?

I hated hated hated this movie.

I will give it grudging respect for tremendous art direction, but that is about it.

Premise: stupid.
Pacing: plodding.
Script: painful.
Story: imcomprehensible and pointless.
Irritating "We can make a sequel" ending: FYMFASMD!

MasterWoodsman wrote on February 17, 2007, 1:01 am
Quoting Ebert now, Jeffy, after that thrashing he gave us? Shame! Shame!

Anyhow, I just saw this and was impressed by the art direction. It made the movie. I found this type of horror far better than straight gore-fests or creepy Japanese horror flicks. This brought you to new worlds and showed it to you.

Now don't get all Lovecraftian on me and argue that "not seeing it is scarier than actually viewing it". Normally I agree with that viewpoint but this movie showed me that it was possible to show the horror clearly without lessening the impact. I had genuine chills.

Try playing the game, D-Bor...it's truly creepy and I only played one of the later later sequels...

Silent Hill 4: The Room

People can think up some pretty twisted shaiite

Dessy played the game and she said it freaked her out. Very creepy stuff. I remember seeing triangle-head in the game and thought that was pretty original.

What's your rating of this movie?
